What is the status?

5. We redesigned the rear panel board with an isolated, FTDI based USB-TTL converter. This allows 'no driver' installation since Windows 'knows' about FTDI. This mod will also eliminate ground loop issues with SDRs like the Flex-1500 and Softrocks by removing the amp-computer ground connection. It also eliminates the need for a 12 MHz crystal. We plan to offer then new board for sale stand-alone for anyone interested in upgrading.

I assume this would prevent the HR50 from producing spikes in my Flex 1500 when the band switch cable is attached.

Thanks,

Yes it eliminates the ground loop caused by the second USB cable.

So far we're getting good reports from Flex users that have the new rear panel.

Jim.

Do you sell a kit to modify my HR50 by adding the new back panel? If so, how much does it cost?

We're getting the product page ready this week. A complete kit to upgrade to the new rear panel will be $30.

Hi Jim,

Any update on when the redesigned rear panel board might be available?

Cheers,
John

How do I know if my Hardrock-50 requires an upgrade? I primarily use it with my IQ32.

Hi Tony,

There's no advantage to the new rear panel board with radios based on the RS-HFIQ (like your IQ32). The PTT and data lines from the RS-HFIQ are optically coupled so even if you do connect the amp to a computer via USB it would not be possible to create a ground loop.

The only conceivable reason is if you were having driver issues with the amps MCP2200 USB chip the new FTDI chip should be more Windows friendly.
